"Available scientific evidences suggest that cell phone use can possibly cause brain cancer" is a collective conclusion of 31 scientists from 14 countries meeting at IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer), managed under the World Health Organization.
This has been the most wide spread rumor since the advent of the large scale use of mobile phones all over the world. Many experts have already suggested the carcinogenic effects of prolonged usage of mobile phones. However, WHO previously ruled out the possibility on grounds of no evidence. But the recent results do tend to point to the dreaded fact. The chairman of the IARC group, Jonathan Samet, said,
After reviewing essentially all the evidence that is relevant … the working group classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans. Some evidence suggested a link between an increased risk for glioma, a type of brain cancer, and mobile phone use.
As a disclosure, the scientists have used the words ‘possibly carcinogenic’ because the case studies were of short durations and obviously not exhaustive. They did, however, warn consumers of a possible threat. Of course, there’s no settling of the issue here because there is a large group of experts calling the whole thing as scare science. Whatever it is, when it comes from WHO, it certainly has some amount of substance in it.
