A few hours ago, Apple finally launched the second iteration of its awesomely popular tablet called the iPad 2 and set the bars even higher. iPad 2 is not only visually more appealing than its predecessor iPad with a 33% slimmer form factor, it is also power-packed from the inside.
Features
- iPad 2 has a Dual Core A5 processor that’s 2x faster than the original iPad allowing 9x better graphics and glitch free interactivity.
- The screen-size is the same as that of the original iPad i.e. 9.7 inches. The thickness has been reduced by 1/3rd and the battery lasts for full 10 hours.
- iPad 2 has 2 cameras – 720p HD video recording capable rear camera and a front facing VGA camera.
- iPad 2 comes in 2 colors, black and white.
- iOS 4.3 – the latest iOS release will power the new iPad 2. [iOS 4.3 will be available for download on March 11]

Accessories
- Smart Cover – Apple introduced ‘Smart Covers’ for the iPad 2 which not only protects your tablet’s screen, but can also act as a supporting stand. iPad 2 automatically goes into sleep when you cover it up and auto wakes up when you remove it. The cover has two magnets attached to its one side that sticks to the iPad to keep itself in place. Covers are available in 5 colors in poly and leather, costing $39 and $69 respectively.

- 1080p HDMI Video Out – Once you have an HDMI cable, your iPad 2 can support 1080p high definition HDMI output for just $39. The best thing is, you can even recharge your iPad with the HDMI cable.
Availability
Initially, the iPad 2 was expected to hit the stores in April but it seems you don’t have to wait that long. iPad 2 will be available for pre-orders from March 11 in the US and from March 25 in other countries. General availability in Apple stores will commence after about 4 weeks from these dates. It is highly probable that the first lot will run out of stock before you put your socks on, so I suggest you pre-order your iPad 2 on March 11 itself.
Price
The price of the iPad 2 varies depending on its storage size and features like WiFi and 3G. It starts from $499 onwards.
| 16 GB | 32 GB | 64 GB | |
| WiFi | $499 | $599 | $699 |
| WiFi+3G | $629 | $729 | $829 |
Limitations
Apparently, there are some limitations even to the new iPad 2. Or should I say ‘intentional’ lack of features. There are no USB ports. The world needs it and it’s simply not there. I am sure there are thousands if not millions who’re relenting away from buying an iPad for this very reason. You cannot use your internet datacards at a non-3G no-WiFi zone.
Another lack of feature is the absence of a quick and easy way to wirelessly transfer files between iPad and other iDevices.
