Merge / delete duplicate contacts in Windows Live HotmailWindows Live Hotmail I must make it clear that this little tip is for beginner’s only. You must have experienced that many of your contacts have multiple email accounts and its quite irritating to see your address book filled with multiple entries of the same person. The reason is, Windows Live Hotmail treats every email address as a unique contact and this makes your address book unorganized and cumbersome to use. However, Windows Live Hotmail offers a feature to counteract this issue.

Here’s how you can either merge multiple email IDs of the same contact or delete all but one of their email IDs:

1) In your Windows Live Hotmail account, click ‘Options’ > ‘More options’.

2) Now, under the ‘Customize your contacts’ category, click ‘Clean up duplicate contacts’.

3) Then click the ‘Clean up duplicate contacts’ button and select a contact from the list.

There you are. You just made your address book much more clean and well-organized.

Force Windows Live Mail to always minimize to system tray in Windows 7Windows Live Mail Sometime ago I showed a simple trick how you can minimize Windows Live Messenger to system tray in Windows 7. Based on the similar trick, I am going show you how you can set Windows Live Mail to always minimize to tray.

1) Right-click on the Windows Live Mail icon and then click ‘Properties’.

2) In the ‘Windows Live Mail Properties’ window, click the ‘Compatibility’ tab. Here, set the ‘Compatibility mode’ to Windows Vista. Click OK.

3) Run Windows Live Mail and you will see its icon in the notification area (system tray). Right-click its icon and choose ‘Hide window when minimized’.

Now whenever you minimize the Windows Live Mail window, it won’t appear in the super bar and you can make it appear again by double-clicking its icon in the system tray.

Force Windows Live Messenger to always minimize to tray in Windows 7windows-live-messenger-icon-150x129 If you have observed and compared closely how Windows Live Messenger behaves in Windows Vista and Windows 7 then you must have figured out that in Windows 7, the Live Messenger does not minimize to tray. Quite annoyingly, it just sits in the Super Bar of Windows 7 which looks absurd. Here is a quick little trick to make Windows Live Messenger behave exactly as it used to in Windows Vista. Many of you must have already got the hint. Yes, the compatibility mode.

To always minimize Windows Live Messenger in system tray in Windows 7, here’s a quick workaround:

1) Click Start Orb to open the ‘Start menu’ and in the search box, type ‘msnmsgr.exe’. The start menu will fetch it. Right click ‘msnmsgr.exe’ and choose ‘Properties’.

2) Click the ‘Compatibility’ tab, change the compatibility mode to ‘Windows Vista’. Click OK and you are done.

Auto linking feature in Windows Live Writer

Auto linking feature in Windows Live Writer We know that there are many offline blog tools available now, one of the best being the Windows Live Writer (part of the Windows Live Essentials suite). These blog tools offer many features which are sometimes ignored. One such useful feature is Auto linking in WLW.

Auto linking feature basically makes a predefined word in to link so that whenever you write that word, it becomes a link to the related content. This saves your time because you don’t have to make a hyperlink to a word everytime you use it. For example, if I want the words ‘Tech Explorer’ to become a link to my website ‘http://www.techexplorer.in’ everytime I use it, then I will add its entry to the Auto linking feature. Here’s how you do it:

1) Open Windows Live Writer. Go to ‘Tools’ >> ‘Options…’ >> ‘Auto Linking…’

2) Press ‘Add’ button to make an entry. Save changes when done.

Now whenever you write the predefined word, WLW will automatically make it a link to the URL you provided. Enjoy Blogging!
