Abbottabad, a small town in northern Pakistan, shot to fame overnight when the death of Bin Laden spread like wild fire. The compound where the terrorist hid also drew much interest. Apparently, a GameBanana user Fletch, came up with a Counter Strike: Source map depicting the exact rendition of the Abbottabad compound for gamers.

According the Fletch, the map is currently a general purpose one, a replica created using the known dimensions of the compound. It may be used as a base for bomb or hostage. Also, 3D skybox may also be added. Naturally, gamers have shown interest and the map has already been downloaded 23,938 times. You can download the map here.

It’s official. Xbox Kinect, the futuristic and revolutionary device that changed gaming from head to toe, has set the GuinessWorld Record as the fastest selling gadget in history, totaling 8 Million units sold between 4 November 2010 to 3 January 2011.

Kinect is the first ever gadget to reach the milestone of 133,333 units sold every 24 hours. Apple’s iPhone and iPad too, stand nowhere close. Gaz Deaves, Editor of Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition, appreciated the product and said:

The sales figures here speak for themselves. We can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector.

The Guinness blog stated, "The new record will be included in the next Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition, which recognises record-breaking achievement in the world of videogames."

So, after a very long time, there’s something worth rejoicing for Microsoft.

We had big laughs when Farmville was demoed at the WWDC 2010 and now the wait is over. Farmville for iPhone and iPod Touch has finally arrived on the app store.

Apparently, it’s needless to say what Farmville’s all about. But on the iPhone and iPod touch, you get exclusive items for extra fun during game-play. A Facebook account is required to play Farmville. Currently available only in New Zealand, the app will soon pave its way completely into the app store. iPad users, too, will be able to download and play Farmville, albeit not in the native resolution.

Soon after Microsoft unleashed Kinect (formerly Project Natal), tons of blogs and websites came up with its expected price hovering mostly around $150. Yesterday, Kinect sensor for Xbox made its official entry to the Microsoft Store and is indeed priced at $149.99.

However, there is a note that says the prices are subjected to change. But, that’s a rare case scenario. For those who don’t know, Kinect is an additional sensor to Microsoft Xbox that brings in unprecedented gaming experience. Requiring no traditional game controllers, Kinect does a full-body tracking of the gamer, captures the movements and then manipulates the game accordingly. Kinect is compatible with all Xbox 360 systems with a minimum 175MB of memory.

On April 6, Microsoft will roll out an update through XBox Live enabling the XBox systems to use any external USB storage provided it’s larger than 1GB.

Upon installing the update, users can now simultaneously add up to two 16GB flash drives at once for storing the game data. That means, 32GB is the maximum one can throttle out. Obviously, you can access the empty space using a PC.

Microsoft’s Larry Hyrb (aka Major Nelson) clears all the speculation in a blogpost,

Microsoft has partnered with Sandisk to deliver a kind of ‘Made for XBox 360’ flash drives which will be available around May. No price details as of yet. [via]

When you step into a race much later when your competitor has already made considerable benchmarks, you need to be highly innovative and an excellent strategist to catch people’s eyeballs. And Bing is doing precisely that.

Considering the mass hysteria created by Farmville, a web based game on Facebook, Microsoft thought it wise to promote Bing on Farmville by luring its users free virtual ‘cash’, supposedly quite a ‘valuable’ asset in the game. This resulted in 80 million users to see the big ‘Bing’ logo on their virtual farms.

The banner read ‘Become a fan of Bing now and get FREE Farm Cash’.

The idea was not only unique, it proved to be a massive hit. The number of fans on Bing’s Facebook page rose from a few lacs to millions and counting. Yes, the thing has gone viral. So, if you are running out of Farmville cash (or whatever) you know what you need to do, right?

PS: I hate Farmville. Never played it. Never will. Period.

Instead of exploring new things all the time, sometimes I dig into what I have already got and I always come up with something new. Very few of us might know that Microsoft also offers lots of free games to its users. ‘The Games’ section in Windows Vista and Windows 7 is often listed in the feature lists but rarely anyone plays the games offered. And if you have checked the link in the ‘Game providers’ subsection lately, then you will find that Microsoft now offers 100+ free games to its users. So if you think you’ve had enough of solitaire and minesweeper, I’d say you do the following:

Click Start > Games. In the ‘Game Providers’ subsection, click ‘More Games from Microsoft’.

It’s October 2009 and Microsoft has already released Windows 7 a few days ago. People all over the world has embraced the new operating system but there are some who are still nostalgic about the operating system that ruled the world for 7+ years – Windows XP. Apart from all the good things that Windows XP had, it had those really beautiful games which you grew up playing them. Now we are on a highly advanced OS called Windows 7 which has the super stylized version of games that featured on Windows XP. But here is your chance to play the same old versions of Windows XP games on Windows 7 without much hassles.

The thing that makes this task easy is the simplicity with which these small applications (like games) were incorporated into Windows XP. In Windows XP, such applications need just an executable file and a dll file to run. Here I am going to show you how you can play the Windows XP version of Solitaire in Windows 7. You can use this method to play other Windows XP games.

Windows XP Solitaire in Windows 7:

You’ll need: Two PCs, one running Windows XP and other, Windows 7 and a USB flash drive.

1) Plug in the USB flash drive in Windows XP machine and navigate to this folder:

C:\Windows\System32

2) Copy and paste the files ‘sol.exe’ and ‘cards.dll’ from the System32 folder to the USB flash drive and safely remove the flash drive.

3) Insert the flash drive in the Windows 7 machine and store both the files in a folder on the local hard disk.

4) Run ‘sol.exe’ and there you are! Enjoy the Windows XP version of Solitaire in Windows 7.

As I mentioned earlier, you can follow this method to play other Windows XP games but I leave that upon you. Enjoy!
