Canonical has consistently released a major Ubuntu iteration every 6 months. The last stable release, Ubuntu 10.04 ‘Lucid Lynx’, was released in April and that makes a new version due in October. Ubuntu 10.10 ‘Maverick Meerkat’ is currently in the final stages of development with a beta version already available for a try-out.
Along with Ubuntu 10.10, its derivatives are also in their Beta and are available for download.

Initially the Beta 1 was going to be released on March 18 but due to some critical issues, it has been postponed to Friday.
We are suspecting that the Beta 1 will be made available at this URL: (YES, We were right in assuming the URL)

Few weeks back we did a post regarding Ubuntu Lucid finally dropping the aging ‘Human’ theme. Little did we know that the UI makeover wasn’t just restricted to the OS until the UI freeze happened a couple of days ago.
As shown by Jono Bacon (Ubuntu Community Manager at Canonical), the massive revamp includes a new ‘lighter’ theme for Lucid Lynx, a different font for Ubuntu Logo and a complete redesign of all Canonical websites and Ubuntu communities.
Ubuntu ‘Light’ Theme:
New Ubuntu Logo font:
New Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx Splash screen:
New Ubuntu community logos:

Unlike every major release till now, one may not find the default ‘Human’ theme in the next version of Ubuntu – Lucid Lynx. In an interview (see video below), Mark Shuttleworth (founder, Ubuntu) stated that there will be a ‘lighter’ theme as the default theme of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx.
No screenshot previews of the theme are available as of yet; one may have to wait till the Lucid UIF takes place on March 4, 2010. [Thanks AnotherUbuntu]
