How to: Remove title bar and trim down Firefox 4 even more

July 8, 2010 23:32 pm by Jal

Important: This is an old post. If you are using Firefox 4 Beta 7+, head over to a newer post with IMPROVED solution.

Mozilla has done a brilliant job with Firefox 4, removing all the clutter and making the UI sleek and trendy. You notice that the UI designers have thoughtfully utilized the screen real estate by providing more space for the actual web content. But there’s always a scope for improvement, or so they say. With a little bit of tweaking, the title bar can be done away with to claim more space for the web content.

Remove title bar and trim down Firefox 4 even more

All you have to do is to download this CSS file (Right-click > Save Link As…) [userChrome.css] and paste it into this folder [If by any chance there's already a file with the same name, replace it.]–

[Windows Vista/7] C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\chrome

[Windows XP] C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\chrome\

Now start Firefox 4 and enjoy the trimmed down version. Do note that, you need to have ‘Tabs on Top’ enabled for this to take effect. This is the modified (and working) version of the tip shown here.

Wow. That box that comes up while I'm in the middle of reading the article is horrible. Definitely addblocking the hell out of this place.

Yeah, I *was* enjoying your content, until you started deliberately obscuring it.

Alright alright.. it's gone now! No more popups.

To all, I have updated the file with some fixes and additional enhancements. Head over to this new post: http://www.techexplorer.in/2011/01/how-to-remove-firefox-4-beta-7-beta-8-title-bar-addon-bar-background.html

@ Jal

Oh, by "Dec. 19 post" I just meant the comment I made here on Dec. 19. (Here's the url: http://www.techexplorer.in/2010/07/remove-title-bar-trim-firefox-4-even-more.html#comment-1651 .)

Brendan: Do mention your URL where you have updated the fix.

To all, I have modified the userChrome.css to fix the problems appearing in FF4B7+ including a fix to change the background of addon bar introduced in FF4B7. New blogpost will be live soon.

@ Martin

Try the fix I mentioned in my Dec. 19 post. Not only will it keep the min/max/close buttons from interfering with the Panorama button, it should also solve your problem as well.

Here's a pic demonstrating the fix in all its majesty:

Hi,

Thanks for this. Where should I put the file with a portable version ?

Thx.

Dripple

I believe you should place it in \Profile\Chrome\ folder.

Hi,
Thanks for working this out - just what I was looking for.
I guess this is similar to Kroo's question.
One problem I have in FF4 b8 on Win7 is that when I have a few tabs open it all works great. But when I open a couple more they cover the window controls, although the windows controls are not visible, they still seem to work - If I click on the tab "x" to close it, FF is exited.
Anyway to make sure that the tab bar is bound by the Windows controls?

I've attached a not very useful pic to illustrate:
http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=2gspy5e&s=7

NB: This mod results in the Panorama and "List all tabs" buttons hiding behind the standard minimize/maximize/close window buttons in Windows.

To fix this, press alt to bring up the menu bar then go to View->Toolbars->Customize. . . then drag about 8 "Space"s to the right of your Panorama button. Click done, and now your Panorama and "List all tabs" buttons should be located just to the left of the minimize/maximize/close window buttons.

Josh: Find "margin: -25px 0 0 105px !important;" and change the 105 to something smaller. I currently use 3.

Hi Jal. Thx for making this. One thing: the first tab does not place itself right next to the 'Firefox' sign on the left top. Is there a way to fix this?

As shown in a screenshot: http://i54.tinypic.com/315hdvk.jpg.
Is there a method to disable the min, max, and close buttons default to the title bar?

@Kroo Min max buttons are rendered by OS as far as the Firefox's window is concerned. They cannot be altered simply by CSS. The tip shown here is limited only to what CSS can do at best. Though I'll see if I could tweak it a bit. I suggest you use it on Windows 7 instead of XP.

Thanks a lot for this one! It made my Firefox 4 experience complete. But it stopped working with FF4 Beta 5. Could you update this file for the newest beta? Thanks A LOT in advance! :-)

@Jimmy Updated the file for FF Beta 5 onwards.
