Pakistani IT students create Facebook’s rival: Millatfacebook

Outraged and irritated over Pakistan’s recent ban on Facebook till 31st May and profane caricatures of Prophet Mohammed on a Facebook page, a youthful group of 6 IT students from Lahore created a social networking site called ‘Millatfacebook’ aimed at a Muslim community of 1.57 billion people.

Millat Facebook

The homepage of the social networking site reads, “Millatfacebook is Pakistan’s very own, first social networking site. A site for Muslims by Muslims where sweet people of other religions are also welcome”. Upon registering, I found it ‘not-too-bad’. I mean, it was beyond what I expected. Of course, it just copies Facebook and its features (like integrated chat, apps, wall, friends, the overall look n’ feel) and needs heavy tweaking, but is pretty decent for a start. The site’s been up for a just a few days now and it already managed to garner 15,000+ registered members.

On the flipside, when the whole world is coming together to form one online community using social networking sites, how justifiable it is to form such networking sites based on religion? Share your views.
