Even though we’re in the Information age, there is a large chunk of people in India who don’t have access to Internet. To make it easier for individuals and companies to reach out to the interiors of the country, the Department of Posts came up with a new service – ‘ePost’.
By using the ‘ePost’ service, businesses and individuals can now send emails across the country via the postal department whereby the department will print the emails on paper and deliver them all over the country. The companies would require to open a free account and provide them the details about the addresses and an email prototype. The postal department would do the rest of the task from programming and preparing the layout to delivering the mail. The charge would be Rs. 6 (‘ePost Corporate’ for businesses) and Rs. 10 (‘ePost’ for individuals) per page of an email and all the payments could be done at the end of the month.
The service silently kicked off on Jan 01, 2010 in Kerala, has set-up printing facilities in Delhi and Kolkata and would extend to the rest of India.
Mr. John Samuel, the General Manager of Department of Posts (Business and Development) said,
We are working on the details of the service. It will be introduced across India in the next one month. We have already started receiving orders for the service. It would reduce the workload of companies, besides helping them to cut costs. Internet and email have revolutionised the world of communications, but its accessibility continues to be a problem for many people, especially in the rural areas. Aiming to bridge the digital divide, we have introduced ePost. Through ePost, customers can send their messages to any location in India in combination of electronic transmission and physical delivery through a network of over 155,000 post offices.
Considering the recent makeover of the post offices in India and now the ‘ePost’ service, the department surely looks healthy and promises huge growth.
