Minimum requirements for Windows Mobile 7?

January 29, 2010 1:36 am by Jal

Minimum requirements for Windows Mobile 7?Some hazy information regarding the minimum requirements for Windows Mobile 7 is coming from Eugene Pavlov, the Product Manager of HTC Russia. In one of his tweets today, he (seemed to) mention the minimum requirements for Windows Mobile 7. The screenshot of the tweet:

Epavlov's Twitter page

Although the specifications seem unbelievable, one cannot deny the fact that it is as per THE Project Manager at HTC Russia.

However, the twist here is that HTC Europe replied to Eldar Murtazin (Editor-in-chief, Mobile-review.com) in a tweet that Eugene is wrong. In fact, the minimum requirements for WM7 is much less compared to what is stated by him.

HTC Europe tweet

For some unknown reason, the HTC_Europe twitter account does not exist now.

Eldar Murtazin, then wrote on his blog (Russian content) about a response that he got related to the minimum configuration for WM7. The translated version is as below:

NOTE: This is a Russian to English translation done using Google Translate and modified for better reading. [View original]

  • Minimum ROM: 128 MB + 512 flash / Your friend (Eugene) stated 8 GB – very far from the true.
  • Minimum RAM: 128 MB – recommended 256+
  • CPU: 600mhz ARM v6+ / Your friend (Eugene) stated 1 GHz – very far from the true.
  • FM receiver is not a requirement for WM7 – means that it is not needed for WM7 to function properly
  • Compass is not a requirement for WM7 – means that it is recommended for the device to have a compass but it is not needed by the OS to function properly.
  • 3.6” display – not a requirement because WM7 devices will be available in different display sizes.
  • WVGA is not minimal resolution for WM7, there are versions available by Microsoft which are QVGA as well WM7 support al resolutions and it is up to the OEM which one they will use for their devices.
  • G-Sensor (accelerometer) – not required but recommended.

So, I guess this is pretty much it! Minimum requirements for Windows Mobile 7 won’t be out of the blue but then that would again be a bold statement to make. Moreover, devices which will be released on Windows Mobile 7 later this year will be having these specifications so difference in opinions is justified.

Apple grabs 13 patents including Proximity Detector for TabletsWhile I write this, it’s less than 4 hours for the much anticipated Apple Event of 2010 where Steve Jobs and Phil Schiller will announce the Apple TabletiPad. While nothing has been unveiled by Apple, clouds of doubt seem to fade away by learning the fact that the US Patent and Trademark Office has approved 13 patents filed by Apple including a patent for Proximity Detector for Tablets.

Apple Patent

This could very well be the patent that will rule 2010 as far as Tablets are concerned. The figure clearly shows the proximity detector being used on a Tablet computer. It’s only until 10 AM PDT on Jan 27, 2010 for us to find out the truth. :)

Some of the important patents acquired by Apple are:

  • Proximity Detector for Tablets.
  • Automatic Detection of Channel Bandwidth.
  • Color Management System.
  • Apparatus and method for rotating the display orientation of a captured image.
  • A video conferencing system and interface for providing modeless timeline based selection of an audio or video file.

How to: Overlay an image / logo on a video

January 27, 2010 18:30 pm by Jal

How to: Overlay an image / logo on a videoQuick tutorial

Recently I had to revamp a video of a family function with some overlaid text and images and I used VirtualDub after a long time. Thought this would be really helpful for anyone who wants to overlay an image / logo on a video and want it to be done really quick. So follow these simple steps.

1) Open the video file in VirtualDub [Download VirtualDub].

2) Setting ‘Compression’ parameters first:

  • Go to ‘Video’ > ‘Compression’.
  • Select the Xvid MPEG-4 or H.264 Codec.
  • Press OK.

3) Now click ‘Video’ > ‘Filters’. In the Filters window, click ‘Add’ button.

4) Here, select the option ‘logo’ from the list and click OK.

Logo filter selection

5) You will see a window like the one shown below. Here you can specify the image to be overlaid on the video and some related options.

Logo filter properties

  • If your image contains Alpha channel (i.e. transparency values) then check mark ‘Enable per-pixel alpha blending using alpha channel’ to retain transparency.
  • X, Y offset values let you better position the image on the video.
  • Use ‘Show Preview’ button to see the preview of the video with the image overlaid on it.

6) Once you are done playing with the settings, click OK a couple of times to close the ‘Filter’ windows.

7) Finally, click ‘File’ > ‘Save as AVI…’

This method is very efficient, time saving and does not require bulky software.

Glow Air theme for Windows 7

January 26, 2010 17:01 pm by Jal

Glow Air theme for Windows 7Didn’t I tell you that the guys at deviantArt are crazy geniuses? Well, some of them are Winboys too. A deviantArt user kAtz93 made a superb Windows 7 theme called ‘Glow Air’ that caught my attention. Yes, it is a full fledge theme and not a themepack.

Glow Air is for those who seek slick1 and edgy themes with some extra glare. Glow Air turns windows sharp edged and with extra faded and translucent borders. It flaunts a cool new ‘Start’ button too!

Glow Air theme for Windows 7

How to install Glow Air theme on Windows 7?

Installation of Glow Air is a bit tricky. Follow these steps:

1) Download Glow Air theme by clicking the link given below.

2) Extract the RAR file to a folder, let’s name it ‘GA’.

3) Now go to ‘GA’ > ‘uxtheme patch’. Here run the UXThemePatcher.exe. [There are two such files. One for Windows 7 x64 and the other for Windows 7 x86. So use it according to your Windows 7 architecture]. This will enable third party themes to be installed on your computer.

3) Now again go to ‘GA’ > ‘Theme’ folder and you will find a ‘Glow Air’ folder and Glow Air.theme file. Copy these two and paste them in ‘C:/Windows/Resources/Themes’.

4) Now go to ‘C:/Windows’. Here, you need to take ownership of ‘explorer.exe’ file. [Don’t know how to take ownership? Read this small tutorial]

5) Once you have taken the ownership of ‘explorer.exe’, rename it to ‘explorer.exe.old’ [This will be your back-up].

6) Now proceed further according to your Windows 7 architecture.

For Windows 7 – x86 (32 bit) users

  • Go to ‘C:/Windows/System32’, take ownership of ‘Explorerframe.dll’ and rename it to ‘Explorerframe.dll.old’.
  • Now in ‘GA’ folder, go to ‘System files’ > ‘Explorerframe (x86 Only)’ folder, copy the ‘Explorerframe.dll file and paste it in ‘C:/Windows/System32’.
  • Again, in ‘GA’ folder, go to ‘System files’ > ‘x86 (32-bit)’ folder, copy the ‘explorer.exe’ file and paste it in ‘C:/Windows/’.

For Windows 7 – x64 (64 bit) users

  • In ‘GA’ folder, go to ‘System files’ > ‘x64 (64-bit)’ folder, copy the ‘explorer.exe’ file and paste it in ‘C:/Windows/’.

7) Finally, go to ‘C:/Windows/Resources/Themes’ and double-click ‘Glow Air.theme’ to apply the theme.

8) If at all you find the Start button not properly displayed, restart your PC and hopefully everything will be fine.

Phew! Enjoy! :)
