This may bring a big and a proud grin on Indian faces to learn the fact that India hardly promoted spam in the last few years. I tumbled upon a website that keeps a check on the origin of the internet spam and as it turns out, US and Europe are the major contributors in increasing the malicious content over the years. It is obvious and it is sad.

The map above clearly shows no signs of spam erupting out of India. Of course, the internet penetration in India is pathetically low compared to US and Europe which is in direct proportion to giving birth to internet spam. In June 2009, a crooked Californian ISP called Pricewert was banned by the US government and within 20 hours the world-wide internet spam levels dropped by 15%. However, according to this website, the drop was short-lived. The spam levels grew to its previously existent figures.
Today, BBC News published an article “US urges cyber hygiene effort”, expressing the concerns of the US regarding 32,000 suspected cyber attacks that happen every 24 hours. As a countermeasure, US wants help to curb down the global internet spam levels. Well, strictly speaking, US first needs to keep its own house spam-free before talking about the global scenario. If it succeeds in doing so, the global levels will collapse anyway. Nevertheless, a good and ethical initiative though. As far as India is concerned, I am proud and happy to see that most Indians are simply unaware of creating spam. This is one instance where I can say – ‘Ignorance is bliss’.
