Office Web Apps: MS Office goes online

Although currently in a ‘Technical Preview’ stage, I am not sure if everyone of you will be able to try this but I can’t keep this within myself as I just experienced the awesomeness of making and editing Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote files…online! Yes, with Office Web Apps, Microsoft introduced a whole new platform using which you can create your office documents online in a jiffy from anywhere. This is a great online Office Suite developed by Microsoft to create Office documents easily. Some striking and apparent advantages are:

1) You can create Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc files from any computer even though MS Office isn’t installed on it.

2) You can download the online copy for further offline use.

I know you are curious to try your hands on it. So I will shut my blabber and tell you how to go about it.

NOTE: I cannot guarantee that you will be able to try the Technical Preview because this involves your prior signup here. But as usual, you cannot say when Microsoft bestows you with a friendly smile. So go ahead anyway and give it a shot.

1) Log into Windows Live SkyDrive using your Windows Live ID.

2) Proceed into any of your folders and upload a Word or Excel file.

3) As soon as the upload will finish you will see a notification just above your uploaded file that says ‘Join our preview program….’. Something like this:

4) Click the ‘Join our preview program’ link and you will be directed to the agreement page. Click ‘Accept’ (duh!)

5) You will notice that a new menu item ‘New’ has been introduced.

6) Click ‘New’ and choose the document type you want to create. You will then be directed to the Online MS Office Interface using which you can create office files just as you’d create them on your computer. You can even download your created filed on your local hard disk.

Needless to say, the file you uploaded can also be edited using Office Web Apps. Please note that you can create and edit Excel and Powerpoint documents but can only ‘view’ uploaded Word documents. Editing functionality of Word documents will be made available soon. Try it yourself and give me your feedback.
