“Make the Next Great User Experience” – With such a catchy tagline, Mozilla has announced a contest called ‘Extend Firefox’ in which the participant has to make a unique and useful addon and/or update the existing ones in a unique way. Such contests have been held by Mozilla in the past and recently it came up with a similar kind of a competition. So what makes this contest a ‘unique’ one. It’s the prize. Yes, the winner of the contest will get a ‘package of prizes’ (yes, a package) including the much drooled over 15’ MacBook Pro.

The Basic Rule:

Create an add-on for Mozilla Firefox 3.5 OR modify an existing one such that it significantly improves user experience and performance. That’s it. See the list of official rules here.

As usual, the entries will be judged by a panel of experts and the prizes will be given according to the usefulness of the add-on, the innovation behind it, the creativity involved and of course the use of open standards.

Important Dates:

The contest has already started on June 16, 2009 and is through till October 2, 2009 – 23:59 Pacific Time (i.e. October 3, 2009 13:29 Indian Standard Time). There is not much time left. So, hurry up.

The winners of the contest will be announced on November 9, 2009.

Prizes:

The prizes are will be distributed in 5 categories:

1) Best New Add-on

3 grand prize winners, each will get a prize package consisting of:

1. Development gear, including a brand new 15″ MacBook Pro
2. A license for the TextMate IDE by MacroMates
3. A license for the Versions SVN client by Sofa
4. A license for ExpanDrive by ExpanDrive
5. Firefox Ogio Metro Backpack stuffed with t-shirts, stickers, and more
6. 5 ebooks of your choice from Manning Publications (limit of $150 total)
7. 3 books from InformIT
8. 2 InformIT video training titles

Apart from that, prizes will be given to 6 runner-ups.

2) Best Updated Add-on

In this category too, 3 grand prize winners, each will get a package consisting of:

1. Development gear, including a brand new 13″ MacBook Pro
2. A license for the TextMate IDE by MacroMates
3. A license for the Versions SVN client by Sofa
4. A license for ExpanDrive by ExpanDrive
5. Firefox Ogio Metro Backpack stuffed with t-shirts, stickers, and more

No runner-up prizes for the Best Updated Add-on.
