Copy multiple entries to clipboard using clipboard managersCopy multiple entries to clipboard using clipboard managers Last night I was working with my brother on his project and there was a lot of material needed to be copied from websites to Word. It was a tiresome process to copy and paste the required material, neglecting few lines in between, again copying and pasting few lines and so on. It was then that I tried to search for something that can ease this everyday process of copy-pasting. I found the clipboard managers. A lot of good ones.

A clipboard managers does the basic task of storing the information for the temporary period of time during the time you copy the content and paste it somewhere. Now the built in clipboard of Windows stores one entry at a time. This is where clipboard managers come in. They let you temporarily store multiple bytes of information, maintains a history, and lets you paste that content one by one. I used some of these clipboard managers but I’d favor ‘Ditto’ clipboard manager.

Ditto’ lets you save multiple items in the clipboard and lets you retrieve them one by one at a later time. Unlimited amounts of data can be stored in clipboard using ‘Ditto’. The most advanced feature of ‘Ditto’ is that, it lets you copy information from one computer and paste it to another.

‘Ditto’ offers lot more features like:

1) Keeping synchronization of clipboard data within multiple computers.

2) Ability to encrypt data when transmitted over the network

3) Foreign character support

and many more…

It may seem like a not so useful utility but let me tell you, you will realize its importance when you’ll truly need it. It is definitely a time saver.

Some other clipboard managers that I came across: Clipmagic (8/10), Clipboard Recorder (8/10), Sanvient (6/10) and ClipTorrent (6/10). Use them and make copy-pasting a breeze! :)

Google Trends appear in search results for latest viral contentI don’t know if anyone has noticed this before but I have spotted something really cool today. It looks like Google has started showing ‘Google Trends’ results in normal search results for content that is presently viral all over the internet.

Currently here in India, the festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is in full bloom and so I did a casual search on Google.com “ganesh chaturthi pooja” and what I saw, apart from real-time updates from social networking sites, was the Google Trends section at the end of the search results showing the ‘Hotness’ of the term.

image

For many searches that I tried afterwards, the ‘trends’ section was absent. From what I believe, Google must be displaying ‘Google Trends’ results within normal search results for topics that are currently ‘hot’ across the internet. Personally, I liked it as it tells me global activity for a particular term and how much popular it is word-wide.

Disable Aero Snap in Windows 7

September 25, 2009 0:28 am by Jal

Disable Aero Snap in Windows 7Windows 7 has definitely introduced lot of features along with eye candy but some people still want their Windows 7 to behave exactly like Windows XP. Well, this little trick is for them. Aero snap feature enables you to maximize / arrange windows on your desktop rather neatly by just dragging the window towards the edge of the screen.

Aero Snap feature in Windows 7

However, you can disable the Aero Snap feature by doing the steps below:

1) Open Registry Editor (type regedit in the Start Menu search bar) and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

2) In the right pane, change the value of ‘WindowArrangementActive’ to 0.

3) Logoff and login again to experience the changes. Now the windows will behave exactly as it were on Windows XP.

Turn IE into Google Chrome

September 22, 2009 21:26 pm by Jal

Turn IE into Google ChromeIt’s yet another war of the browsers, I suppose and I think Google, though looks calm and quiet, is furiously paving its way to destroy everything that comes its way. This time, Google has found a way to let users experience the power of Google’s web browser, Chrome on Internet Explorer itself by making a plugin called ‘Google Chrome Frame’ for IE.

Google launched ‘Google Chrome Frame’ claiming it have the ability to seamlessly integrate itself with Internet Explorer and provide better browsing experience with speedy Javascript engine. Google’s official blog stated that:

With Google Chrome Frame, developers can now take advantage of the latest open web technologies, even in Internet Explorer. From a faster Javascript engine, to support for current web technologies like HTML5′s offline capabilities and <canvas>, to modern CSS/Layout handling, Google Chrome Frame enables these features within IE with no additional coding or testing for different browser versions.

When Google Chrome Frame detects this tag it switches automatically to using Google Chrome’s speedy WebKit-based rendering engine. It’s that easy. For users, installing Google Chrome Frame will allow them to seamlessly enjoy modern web apps at blazing speeds, through the familiar interface of the version of IE that they are currently using.

Seems like that’s one way to actually make IE users get used to the Chrome interface and eventually use Chrome as their primary browser. We can’t say for sure, can we? Let say, it may not be entirely true but it sure has got potential to drift away some IE users. For more on ‘Google Chrome Frame’ check out the video:

Stop Firefox from leaking memory

September 22, 2009 10:02 am by Jal

Stop Firefox from leaking memoryFirefox If you are a little too geek then you must have figured out what I am saying. So a little explanation for the learners: Firefox sometimes have a tendency to leak memory mainly due to a buggy installation or due to some bad add-on. This results in Firefox running like a sloth and usually crashes in the end. This can be stopped by restarting Firefox. Here I am going to show you how you can bring down the Firefox’s memory usage without restarting it.

Firefox leaking memory

1) Open configuration utility by writing ‘about:config’ in the Firefox address bar and pressing ‘Enter’.

2) In the page that appears, right-click anywhere and select ‘New’ > ‘Boolean

3) Write the below code in the textbox and click ‘OK’:

config.trim_on_minimize

4) Set its value to ‘true’ by double-clicking it.

5) Restart Firefox. Now whenever Firefox’s memory consumption shoots up, you just have to minimize Firefox to bring the consumption back down. This is far more convenient than interrupting yourself from your work and restarting Firefox.

Office Web Apps: MS Office goes online

September 18, 2009 4:50 am by Jal

Office Web Apps: MS Office goes online Although currently in a ‘Technical Preview’ stage, I am not sure if everyone of you will be able to try this but I can’t keep this within myself as I just experienced the awesomeness of making and editing Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote files…online! Yes, with Office Web Apps, Microsoft introduced a whole new platform using which you can create your office documents online in a jiffy from anywhere. This is a great online Office Suite developed by Microsoft to create Office documents easily. Some striking and apparent advantages are:

1) You can create Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc files from any computer even though MS Office isn’t installed on it.

2) You can download the online copy for further offline use.

I know you are curious to try your hands on it. So I will shut my blabber and tell you how to go about it.

NOTE: I cannot guarantee that you will be able to try the Technical Preview because this involves your prior signup here. But as usual, you cannot say when Microsoft bestows you with a friendly smile. So go ahead anyway and give it a shot.

1) Log into Windows Live SkyDrive using your Windows Live ID.

2) Proceed into any of your folders and upload a Word or Excel file.

3) As soon as the upload will finish you will see a notification just above your uploaded file that says ‘Join our preview program….’. Something like this:

4) Click the ‘Join our preview program’ link and you will be directed to the agreement page. Click ‘Accept’ (duh!)

5) You will notice that a new menu item ‘New’ has been introduced.

6) Click ‘New’ and choose the document type you want to create. You will then be directed to the Online MS Office Interface using which you can create office files just as you’d create them on your computer. You can even download your created filed on your local hard disk.

Office Web Apps interface

Needless to say, the file you uploaded can also be edited using Office Web Apps. Please note that you can create and edit Excel and Powerpoint documents but can only ‘view’ uploaded Word documents. Editing functionality of Word documents will be made available soon. Try it yourself and give me your feedback.
